The Problem of Counterfeit Vera Bradley Bags on eBay

Without a doubt, I think the number one reason most people avoid eBay for purchasing Vera Bradley bags is the concern that the item they purchase will be a fake or counterfeit bag. Unfortunately, this is a major problem that eBay is continually addressing.

Recently, a French court ruled against eBay in a case involving the sale of three designer Hermes handbags, two which were counterfeit. The court ordered eBay to pay damages of 20,000 euros, or approximately $30,000, to Hermes, for its direct involvement in the sale of the counterfeit bags. This is not the end of eBay’s legal troubles in France either. Louis Vitton and Dior Couture, two other luxury French fashion designer labels, have also sued eBay, seeking multimillion dollar (or, depending on where you’re from - euro) judgments.

Granted, most people are not interested in purchasing designer French handbags, but what does this all mean for you - the average person who is thinking of spending fifty bucks or so on a Vera Bradley bag? Is it worth the risk to purchase from an eBay buyer?

Unfortunately, there really are no straight answers. I personally have purchased Vera Bradley purses from eBay with no problems. However, there are a few steps that I take to ensure that I am receiving a genuine product, and not a knockoff or fake.

Here are my top tips:

1. Know your seller.

No, you do not have to personally “know” your seller, but do review their feedback scores. How long has the seller been active on eBay? How have previous buyers rated them? If the seller is fairly new to eBay or has a history of negative feedback, my suggestion is to move on and shop elsewhere, unless you don’t mind taking the risk.

2. Read the item description.

This seems simple, but many people bidding on eBay just read the title and do not take the time to read the description. I have even caught myself doing this, especially if an auction is in its final minutes. I remember hearing of someone who thought he purchased a popular hard-to-find game system for several hundred dollars. When his item arrived, he was surprised to find out it was just the box and not the actual game system. Of course, he immediately complained to the seller, who responded that the item was exactly as described. eBay did intervene, and the buyer was eventually refunded his money, but I’m sure it was a major hassle.

I reiterate, read the description. For example, there are several sellers on eBay who make their own handmade items using Vera Bradley fabrics and materials. Admittedly, many of these items are very nice. However, if you’re looking a genuine product made by the manufacturer, you are not going to be happy with it if it’s handmade.

3. Take a look at the picture.

Most sellers include a picture of the item being auctioned with their listing. If no picture is included, request a picture from the seller. Likewise, if you suspect that the picture is a stock photo and/or not an actual photo of the item up for auction, request one. If the seller is unwilling or unable to cooperate, this should raise a red flag.

4. Trust your instincts.

Most importantly, listen to your gut. If something feels wrong, keep looking.
